Ring in the New Year at First Night Monterey!

Will you be in beautiful coastal Monterey to celebrate the New Year? If so, be sure to check out First Night Monterey on December 31. First Night Monterey is an affordable, alcohol-free family celebration welcoming in the New Year.

The 2012 theme is “A FantaSea.” Historic downtown Monterey will be transformed by the art inspired by the ocean with colors, lights, musical entertainment and performances. More than 200 artists will come to downtown Monterey to perform for audiences on New Year’s Eve. The Monterey Conference Center will host many activities and performances throughout the afternoon and evening. Alvarado Street will be illuminated and animated with blue and green aquarium lights and projections. Nearby theaters, churches, concert halls and other buildings will participate with their own decorations and undersea art.

The Opening Ceremony on Colton Lawn stage on Pacific Street will start the event at 3pm. Kids Night Out! begins at 3:30pm with hands-on arts and crafts such as face painting and henna tattoos. Folk music, a magic show, and puppet art theater will also entertain kids of all ages.  At 5:30pm, the Twilight Procession of talented will begin moving down Alvarado Street. All day long performances range from classical to hip hop, jazz to reggae, dance to the written word and art. You can also commit to your New Year’s resolution at the interactive Resolution Sculpture. At 11:15pm, the countdown to midnight will begin with festive music.

Adult Buttons for First Night Friday are $15 and youth buttons are $10 each until December 10, 2011. After this date, prices will raise to $20 for adult buttons and $12 for youth. Day of (bought on December 31) buttons are $22 for adults and $15 for children. A family pack of two adult tickets and two youth tickets can be purchased together for $45 until December 10 and $55 before December 28. Tickets can be bought online or at Safeway, Nob Hill or Walgreens Stores in Monterey County.
