Why the aquarium?

The Aquarium has daily feedings, programs, and specialized tours to inform and enlighten guests. In the summer, there are educational sleepovers and diving expeditions to immerse your family into the aquatic experience. Animals at the Aquarium include penguins, sharks, sea otters, jellyfish, seahorses, octopi and much more. One of the highlights of the Aquarium is the Kelp Forest Canopy Walkthrough, where visitors can walk through a sunlit canopy of kelp and try to spot a snail, crab or fish taking shelter in the forest. Kids will enjoy the interactive exhibits that encourage learning about the environment in the Enchanted Kelp Forest. They will be able to take home stamped bookmarks as souvenirs to remind them of the importance of conservation.

Activities To Do

There are displays and exhibits for every age at the Monterey Bay Aquarium. Infants can play in the Coral Reef Kingdom, where there is plenty to see and touch at their eye level. The Waterbed Play Area is specially designed to encourage toddler movement. The Coral Reef Kingdom also has displays with colorful ocean creatures and differently shaped blocks to help children learn. Toddlers will also enjoy the Touch Pool of the Enchanted Kelp Forest, which allows kids and parents to touch sea stars, abalones, sea urchins, kelp crabs and more.

Eating options at the Aquarium include an on-site picnic area for guests behind the Education Building and the Portola Restaurant and Café. Individual guests can also picnic in the outside amphitheatre at the Great Tide Pool. A number of picnic sites are also available within walking distance of the Aquarium at Lover’s Point, Washington Park and San Carlos Beach near many Monterey Bay Aquarium hotels.  No food or drink is allowed in the Aquarium.
