Discover the World at the Old Monterey Farmer's Market

The Old Monterey Farmer’s Market is a great way to explore the culture of beautiful seaside community Monterey. It spans 3.5 city blocks and runs year-round, rain or shine. It offers a unique opportunity to travel the world in just over three blocks through hand crafted arts and crafts, jewelry, furniture, clothing, international food, organic produce, flowers and pastries.

Produce vendors come from the nearby areas such as Salinas and Watsonville, as well as Fresno and Sacramento. Arts and crafts vendors come from all corners of the world, selling work from Africa, Colombia, Mexico, Russia, Japan, China, Yugoslavia and much more. Food vendors at the Farmer’s Market are just as diverse, serving Indian, Japanese, Korean, Mexican, Mediterranean and BBQ cuisine. There is also a Bakers’ Alley where you can feast on pastries, baklava, European breads, cookies, muffins, pies and cakes.

Local community events are another highlight of the Farmer’s Market. You have the opportunity to donate blood through the Community Hospital of Monterey Peninsula, adopt a furry friend from the SPCA, register to vote, and enjoy local music. The holidays feature special carolers dressed in top hats, bonnets and long overcoats straight out of a Dickens’ novel.

The Farmer’s Market is held weekly in Downtown Monterey on Tuesday evenings. It is open an extra hour during the summer as there are more daylight hours to enjoy the market! Downtown Monterey is a great place for visitors to enjoy a delicious meal, shop or experience the history of Monterey. The main street is Alvarado, which was named for Juan Bautista Alvardo, the former governor of Alta, California. If you happen to be in Monterey on a Tuesday evening, be sure to check out the Farmer’s Market for a great evening!
